Comparing React and Vue: Choosing the Right JavaScript Framework

Just a regular guy. I'm a front-end dev building responsive and innovative apps at my place of work and I'm a soon-to-be SaaS founder. I love playing video games like Asphalt 9, eFootball, I love music as well. That's almost all there is to know about me
When newbies get to the point where they have to choose a framework to progress in their frontend development journey, the most popular question they ask is, "What do I learn, React or Vue?". Don't worry. You are not alone. I was once in that situation and I'm pretty sure the developers you look up to have asked that question too. So, as you may have guessed, this article is aimed at helping you pick the right one for you. Before we start, quick shout-out to HNG. They are the ones that gave me the motivation for this article, so be sure to visit their website. Without wasting much time, let's get started.
What is React?
First things first, we need to know what our options are before choosing either so let's get that out of the way first. React is simply a JavaScript library that is used to create both simple and complex user interfaces through the use of components. React components are small pieces of code that contain a specific functionality or user interface of the whole website. They can be reused anywhere in the codebase and thus makes for effective code management.
Advantages of React
Component-Based Architecture: React uses a component-based architecture, where complex UIs are broken down into smaller, reusable components. This promotes code reusability, modularity, and easier maintenance. Each component has a well-defined purpose, making it easier to understand and reason about the code.
Declarative Style: React implements a declarative programming paradigm. You describe how the UI should look for a specific state, while React handles the modifications behind the scenes. This improves the code's readability and maintainability.
Virtual DOM: React uses a virtual DOM, which is a lightweight copy of the real DOM. When the application state changes, React calculates the minimal modifications required in the real DOM, resulting in faster and more performant updates.
Limitations of React
Steeper Learning Curve: Compared to simpler libraries, React has a steeper learning curve. The component-based architecture, JSX syntax, and concepts such as virtual DOM and state management require a solid understanding of JavaScript and React-specific ideas.
Performance Considerations: While React is generally performant, complex apps with multiple components or frequent changes may encounter performance difficulties. In such cases, rendering optimization and component lifecycle management are critical.
What is Vue?
Similar to React, Vue (pronounced "view") is a JavaScript framework used for building reusable web interfaces. It provides a declarative, component-based programming model that helps you efficiently develop user interfaces of any complexity. In simpler terms, it also makes use of components to develop user interfaces just like React.
Advantages of Vue
Template-Based Syntax: Vue's UI is defined using HTML-like templates and directives. This makes it easy to learn for developers who are already familiar with HTML.
Lightweight Core: The core library of Vue is lightweight and easy to integrate into existing projects.
Versatility: Vue can be used for a variety of web development scenarios, including desktop applications, mobile development using frameworks such as Weex, and even server-side rendering.
Limitations of Vue
Smaller Community and Ecosystem: Vue, unlike React, has a smaller but more active community and ecosystem of libraries and tools. This may imply discovering solutions for specific functionalities or encountering fewer pre-built components for complex requirements.
Reliance on Third-Party Solutions: While Vue offers a lightweight core, many capabilities found in full-fledged frameworks (such as routing and state management) need the integration of extra libraries. This can increase complexity and create compatibility concerns.
Which should you choose?
Now to answer the million dollar question "React or Vue", I'll say you should go for... Nah, I'm just kidding. I won't make that choice for you. As with all things in life, both have their strengths and weaknesses. So what I'll say is that the choice of what to use between the two depends. Depends on what?
For starters, the project you're building can affect your choice of whether t use React or Vue. For example, it would be advised to use React for project with complex UI but for a simple UI, Vue is more likely to be recommended. Another factor that influences your choice is the job market in your location. You might need to consider which is more in demand, which has higher salaries and things like that. You might also make your decision based off of which you enjoy using or are more comfortable with.
Summary
In summary, both React and Vue are powerful technologies that utilize a component-based programming model for building frontend web applications. They will both at the job done no matter the challenge. But to help you decide which is the best, you can take into consideration the content of the last section and even go beyond that.
Whatever framework you choose, I wish you success in whatever you are trying to create(as long as it is for good, that is).
Before we part ways though, there is one more thing...
HNG
I mentioned "HNG" as the source of my motivation to write this post. "Well, What exactly is HNG?", you may ask.
HNG Internship is a fast-paced bootcamp for learning digital skills. It's focused on advanced learners and those with some pre-knowledge, and it gets people into shape for job offers. In the HNG bootcamp, you work in teams to build apps and solve problems. Open to coders, designers, product managers and many more.
The benefit of enrolling with them? One who enrolls would rapidly upskill in technology, learn new tools and techniques, build real-world projects, and have the potential for job placement with their partner companies
To get started, make sure you visit https://hng.tech/internship and enroll in the program. Or if you are looking to hire the best of the best talents, visit https://hng.tech/hire.
That's all from me, I hope you had a good read and can now decide if React is better to use or vice versa. Thanks for reading.
